Knowing your child's moon sign: the parenting boost you didn't know you needed
Give the gift of astrological perspective to the parents in your life!
One of the key features of my coaching is the foundation of knowing my clients’ astrological birth chart. Did you know I give readings to individuals so that they can get a snapshot of the stars the moment they were born, serving as a roadmap and guide for the evolution of their soul this life around? Pretty cool, huh?
It’s not just cool, it’s deeply impactful for fostering greater self-compassion and compassion for others and the diversity of souls in this world.
You know that classic question:
How can one child be this way and the other be so different?
Or:
Why do they need to decompress at home in their cozy corner after socializing and my other one is down for the next adventure and to keep going?
There is literally a core curriculum class in many Psychology departments called “Theory of Personality”.
All different systems, including Psychology, seek to explain the sheer mass of quirks and differences between us.
Astrology is an ancient system of the meaning making of the stars.
It is elemental, it is archetypal. It is fundamentally about energy and relationship and cycles.
I can’t pinpoint when I became interested in astrology exactly, but it was some point in my early childhood. I heard someone read the horoscope for Cancer and I thought to myself, “well that sounds accurate”.
Of course there is so much more than a newspaper horoscope soundbite and these days you can find an immense amount of information to study, and astrologers to learn from and with.
In 2017, I had a crisis moment in my life.
I had quite literally burned my own energy up until my cortisol levels were mere fumes in the morning, puttering out like gasps for air as the day continued.
I didn’t know it then, but I would embark on reclaiming ancestral ways of living with the cycles of nature. Much as my Nordic ancestors did practicing pagan rituals.
My bones and cells eventually began to remember that I am nature, and I must align myself with her rhythms.
I started listening to a podcast called Moonwise, which I still listen to, to this day.
The first episode I consumed was about reclaiming the menstrual cycle and its phases and stages.
As a Cancer sun, my ruling planet is the Moon.
The Moon changes signs roughly every 2.5 days, shifting between the twelve energies of the zodiac, within that the four elements of fire, earth, air, water.
So long, the judgment of “moody”.
Hello, the blessings of being “moon-dy”.
Re-educating myself about my natural inner cycle that syncs with the astral cycle of the moon held me close and brought me closer to myself, with love and compassion.
This particular podcast is original in that it’s recurring co-host is an astrologer, medicine woman and psychotherapist named Susan A. Lipshutz, LCSW.
So what bloomed from there was this deeper dive into the stars and my birth chart in an effort to grow some intrinsic self-compassion and understanding that I really needed at the time to course-correct from burnout.
The stars led me out and through a rite of passage that I see as a gift now, and I understood it to be then as well, despite how hard and uncomfortable it was.
Fast forward to many classes, readings, studying, a mentorship and my own launch into giving the readings instead of just receiving them.
I still say, astrology is a path to greater compassion. This is the world I am using my energy to help co-create.
A world that is steeped in more understanding, compassion, diversity and rhythm.
Fast forward to applying this continued learning and passion for astrology to my own parenting, to my coaching clients, my astrology clients and all of my community: parents.
Guess what? Yesterday, December 12, was the New Moon in Sagittarius.
This is a time to plant seeds and make wishes for what you would like to grow until the next lunation cycle, and for the next six months until the Full Moon in Sagittarius on May 23, 2024.
Sagittarius is the sign ruled by the ever expansive Jupiter.
Sagittarius has a symbol of an archer shooting an arrow…shooting an arrow into the great unknown of potential.
This New Moon is at 20 degrees, so the protocol is to see where that degree point is in your birth chart. I’ll leave instructions at the end of this post for how to find yours.
This degree point is at the beginning of my 11th house, which is funny enough, Aquarius’s house, and Aquarius is my rising sign and is also the sign associated with Astrology.
The 11th house is associated with community.
In the last week, Astrology has been strongly on my mind. Not just any astrology, particularly an offering I came up with earlier this year that I have been excited about, but kind of neglected putting my energy into.
This New Moon is about following through on a dream again, shooting another arrow into the dark sky knowing that it will land, even though the details are unclear.
To follow your joy and excitement, passion and interest.
So here I am, taking action and promoting an offering that benefits my community.
I live to serve my community of mothers and parents and caregivers.
I live to protect and nurture children and by proxy, supporting their parents helps me work towards that mission.
The framework of astrology has the potential to help you as an individual, and maybe as a parent if that is relavent, to better understand why you are the way you are.
Why you need your emotions met in a particular way.
Why you may find vigorous exercise to be more integrative for your processing than talking for an hour.
The crux of my work as a coach and in my other gig as a psychotherapist is all about helping clients see, understand, meet, value and advocate for their core needs.
Needs. Care. Emotions. Health. Nurturance. These things are all Cancerian, and for me in particular, Cancerian sun in the 6th house of service and health.
Here I am having written a lot. I swore I was going to keep this one shorter.
But it seems I have a lot to say on this topic, a lot of passion for sparking curiosity in my community of mothers and parents (and all humans too) to lean into the expansive perspective of your birth chart!
What if you understood yourself just a little bit better? Saw yourself just a little bit clearer?
What if you could see your child or children or partner more clearly for their innate diversity and felt more empowered to practically apply that knowledge to impact the quality of your relationship?
To be a parent these days in America is not for the faint of heart.
To be a parent these days at all is excruciating as we see innocent children suffer at the hands of ongoing complexity and conflict.
All children are our children.
It matters to care and as Jack Kornfield says,
“What is the meaning of life if not to learn to love better”?
